Venous insufficiency is a condition in which the veins malfunction, resulting in blood not returning smoothly from the legs to the heart. Chronic venous insufficiency causes the walls of the veins to degenerate and the valves to wear out. The result is the accumulation of blood in the veins, especially after long hours of standing. Venous insufficiency is usually due to valve dysfunction, it can also be the result of an old blood clot in the legs. Key risk factors for venous insufficiency are advanced age, family history of the disease, gender, obesity, long standing and height.
